Community-based program
Pathfinder
Academy
Pathfinder Academy is
an alternative education program for pregnant and parenting
teens, ages 14-21, who reside in the Portland Public Schools
attendance area and who may be English Language Learners.
Pathfinder Academy is located in North and SE
Portland. The school year runs from September through
early June, yet has open enrollment throughout the year. The
hours are 10:30 to 4:30 pm. Potential students are
encouraged to come meet individually with the director and
visit the school.
Students are
supported in the program through individualized academic plans,
peer support groups, and transitional support to community
colleges or professional training. Credit retrieval is also an
option for those students who wish to transfer back into
regular high schools.
The academic focus is
on creating an individualized program that meets the needs of
each student. Pathfinder Academy offers a comprehensive
English Language Learner program that includes full ESL
services. Reading, writing, and math are all emphasized
as foundation skills for any academic pursuit. GED preparation
and test practice is offered, as well as Parenting and
Health/Nutrition. A teen parent support group meets
weekly.
Licensed childcare is
provided off-site by Early Head Start for children from
six weeks to age three. Age-appropriate activities are
offered in a loving and nurturing environment. USDA approved
meals are served. Hands-on parent involvement is also an
important part of the program.
In addition to GED
preparation, Pathfinder Academy offers a school-to-work
program. This includes classroom instruction, resume
preparation, job readiness skills, and college tuition
assistance.
